Cornelis de Heem specialized in still-lives, like his father Jan Davidsz de Heem (Utrecht 1606 - 1684) who had a workshop with collaborators and pupils including Abraham Mignon. Trained by his father,

Cornelis joined the Guild of Saint Luke as a master painter in 1660. Female artist Rachel Ruysch was largely influenced by the works of the De Heem family.
