Cornelis de Heem specialized in still-lives, like his father Jan Davidsz de Heem (Utrecht 1606 - 1684) who had a workshop with collaborators and pupils including Abraham Mignon. Trained by his father,
Cornelis joined the Guild of Saint Luke as a master painter in 1660. Female artist Rachel Ruysch was largely influenced by the works of the De Heem family.
The attribution of this work has been confirmed by Fred Meijer as recorded in the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie database (R.K.D.)
