λ A BATAVIAN SILVER-MOUNTED TORTOISESHELL CASKET, possibly Southeast Asian Dutch Colonies, Indonesia or the Malay Archipelago, late 18th - 19th century, of rectangular shape, resting on four compressed globular silver feet, the exterior enhanced with Western silver mounts, handles, hinges, studs and lock, the contour of the mounts imitating jagged leaves and vegetal motifs, the front key linked to six chainlets, the interior with a later velvet lining, the hinges on the interior of the lid stamped with three silver hallmarks, including the Dutch sword mark (in use 1814 - 1905) for small works of silver with minimum 833 fineness (83.3% pure silver); the date letter mark (K - 1844); and the maker's mark A/C, 9.5cm x 16cm x 21.5cm.
