CANGO CAVES, NEAR OUDTSHOORN, SOUTH AFRICA, c.1900

A group of nine early silver prints depicting the entrance and interior of the Cango Caves, measuring approx. 19 x 24cm, with six views of interior stalactites and stalagmites; an interesting view of a man standing at the entrance to the cave with a stereo field camera visible in the foreground; a man climbing a ladder into a section of the cave; and a portrait of nine men standing with their back to the camera while a singular man with a rope around his neck sits in front of them, facing the lens. With a further 29 early silver print South Africa landscape views, including Oudtshoorn and the Cango Valley, Maritzburg, Pretoria, Johannesburg, and unknown locations, some titled and credited 'JEM' in the negative. The Cango Caves were one of the first sites of interest in South Africa to be protected by environmental legislation.

Estimated at £200 - £300
