SHIP'S LOG - [Printed title:] Log-Book and Journal for the Use of Officers of the Royal Navy. H.M.S. [In manuscript:] "Inflexible". Devonport: A. H. Swiss, January 1893. 4to. Manuscript logbook on c. 24 pages, many pages blank. Contemporary half roan with "Officers Journal" stamped in gilt on upper cover (rubbed, a few strips worn). Provenance: Gerald C. A. Marescaux, Lieut. (signature on front free endpaper); "My Father['s] log Med. Commission when he first met my Mother. Page headed 'May 6th' described Sinking of Victoria with Adml. Tryon" (pencil inscription on front free endpaper). A CONTEMPORARY ACCOUNT OF THE SINKING OF H.M.S. VICTORIA, in which 358 members of the crew drowned including its Captain, Vice-Admiral George Tryon (1832-93). On 22 June 1893, the fleet was on exercises when Tryon's flagship, H.M.S. Victoria, sank following a bizarre order from him which brought it in collision with the flagship, H.M.S. Camperdown, the ship of his second in command, Rear Admiral Sir Albert Markham. Tryon went down with his ship, his last reported words being "It is all my fault". In addition to describing the fatal manoeuvre, the log also lists the officers drowned. The incident inspired the drowning of Admiral Horatio d' Ascoyne in the film "Kind Hearts and Coronets" (1949).
Estimated at £400 - £600
