Lot 302 - [NICHOLS, John Gough (1806-73)].  A Series of...

[NICHOLS, John Gough (1806-73)].  A Series of Antient Allegorical, Historical, and Legendary Paintings, in Fresco, Discovered, in the Summer of 1804, on the walls of the Chapel of the Trinity, belonging to the Gild of the Holy Cross, at Stratford-upon-Avon. London: Nichols and Son, 1836. Folio. Additional title within woodcut border with coat-of-arms and initials in red and blue, engraved plan of the church, 47 plates by Thomas Fisher, some hand-coloured, 2 facsimile appendices after Caxton at the end (a few spots and small stains). Contemporary half calf and marbled boards (rubbed, bumped and scratched). Provenance: W. H King (armorial bookplate); R. J. Wigington (label). FIRST EDITION. A pencil note on the front pastedown suggests "only 100 printed - now rare."
