Note: Born Marjorie Watson-Williams in Bristol, Paule Vézelay was a pioneering artist who transitioned from figurative painting to abstract art. She trained at the Slade School of Fine Art and other notable British institutions before moving to France in 1926, where she adopted the name Paule Vézelay for aesthetic reasons. Immersed in the School of Paris, Vézelay cultivated connections with prominent figures such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and Sophie Taeuber-Arp. Her work, characterized by its bold abstraction and innovative use of form, positioned her as a key figure in the development of modernist art. This woodblock print dates from her time in the UK and demonstrates the artist's early figurative work. This small edition perfectly captures her move towards abstraction with it's use of bold lines and abstracted figures. The work is signed under her birth name Marjorie Watson-Williams.
