Gustave Le Gray (1820-1884)
BRICK AU CLAIR DE LUNE, (THE BRIG ON THE WATER), 1856. Albumen print from wet collodion glass negative, image/sheet size 41.6 x 32.1cm, with the photographer's facsimile signature in red ink lower right recto, numbered in manuscript ink verso, and complete with archivally removed later thick card mount, bearing the inscription in pencil verso to 'A. St John Mildmay from C.P.B.'

Provenance:
Sir Aubrey Neville St John Mildmay (1865-1955) was born on 14 February 1865. He was the son of Reverend Charles Arundell St. John-Mildmay and Harriet Louisa Neville-Grenville. He married Louisa Jane Maunder, daughter of John Barrett Maunder, on 24 February 1902, and died on 30 March 1955 at age 90.
He was educated at Winchester College, Winchester, Hampshire, England, and graduated from New College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, in 1888 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.). He graduated from New College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, in 1895 with a Master of Arts (M.A.). He was Vicar between 1906 and 1907 at Pentleton, British Columbia, Canada. He was lecturer in classics and philosophy between 1917 and 1924 at University of British Columbia, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He was a versifier and theological writer. He succeeded as the 10th Baronet St. John [G.B., 1772] on 4 November 1949.
