A pair of early 19th century French 18 carat gold spectacles, Paris 1809-19 by Jean-Baptiste-Francois Lebel (reg. 16 July 1774)

Hinged arms and ear supports, bright cut engraved decoration to the arms of an anthemion below a fleur-de-lis. Lenses deficent. Marked throughout with third standard mark, large excise gold mark, later French guarantee mark.

Length (closed across body) – 12.4 cm / 4.85 inches

Length of arm - 11.5 cm / 4.55 inches

Length of ear supports - 6.4 cm / 2.5 inches

Length of a single lens - 3.65 cm / 1.5 inches

Weight – 27 grams / 0.87 ozt
