Sabatini (Rafael)

Sabatini (Rafael)

Typed letter signed ('Rafael Sabatini') to a D. Jobson, saying in part "The illustrator's disregard of my text in the matter of Jeanne d'Arc's hair at the time of her execution had not been overlooked by me. No such illustration will appear in the volume (issued yesterday) or any other illustration depicting an excessively feminine Maid. In the matter of the shaven head, oddly enough, no picture that I have ever seen of the Maid at the stake represents her otherwise than as with long hair. My publishers are including in the volume, for the sake of its general and particular interest, a photograph of the statue now standing in Rouen. It presents the same disregard for actuality. In the Florence Nightingale essay there is not really the inconsistency you indicate. Having noted her exclamation at the age of thirty, I retrospectively consider what led up to it", one page, 8vo, Clock Mill, Clifford, 24 March 1934; together with: a card signed by Sabatini and dated 'January 1948'; signed loose title page of his book 'The Lost King' and an autograph note to Messrs Rivington's enclosing a cheque, with stamps and cancellation marks, 8vo, 81 Albert Bridge Road, 9 March 1921; also including a clipped signature by poet and literary critic Sir William Watson (5)
