Doré (Gustavé) Christian Martyrs, engraved by Herbert Bourne, 1875; The Vale of Tears, engraved by John Saddler, 1890; signed in pencil by both artist and engraver, stamped as artist's proofs, india paper Chine-collé, surface dirt, one tear affecting the plate (but not the india paper), plates c. 690 x 940mm, Fairless & Beeforth (2) *** The Doré Gallery, which ran in London from 1868 to 1892, attracted religious pilgrimages and ministers, who would give sermons in front of the paintings.
