A Nicholas II Russian 84 zolotnik (875 standard) silver gilt and cloisonné enamel tea glass holder (Podstakannik), Moscow circa 1895 mark of Gustav Klingert (active 1865-1917)

Of conventional form, with cavetto skirting base, the body with applied wire decoration of rosettes, arabesque scrolls and leafy tendrils, in opaque white, opaque turquoise, royal blue and foil backed translucent red enamel all between a course of turquoise pellets and corded edges. The base cavetto with a three-colour geometric band above a course of turquoise pellets. The three-section angular handle with four colour decoration of leaf tendrils and trefoils, with an applied twisted wire edge. Marked only to the base with a dvoinik standard mark, and makers mark GK in Latin script within an oblong cartouche, seemingly overstriking itself.

A Podstakannik by Gustav Klingert, in the same colourways with the same form of handle, a similar cavetto base and courses of turquoise pellets was sold Sotheby’s London, 26 Nov 2008, lot 219 (£5,250 incl. premium)
