AN IZNIK POTTERY TILE FRAGMENT WITH ARABESQUE AND SPLIT PALMETTE SCROLLS
Ottoman Turkey, ca. 1580 - 1600
Of rectangular shape, painted in the typical Iznik pottery colour palette of cobalt blue, turquoise, green, and bole red with black outlines, all on a white ground, the decoration consisting of intricate arabesques intertwined with trilobed full palmettes and split-leaf palmettes enhanced with red dots, set within white and turquoise borders, the black outlines fine and crisp, the back plain except for inventory numbers in pencil '1476' and '9476', 30cm x 22.8cm.
Provenance: Purchased at a provincial French auction in 2002, in a private European collection since.
