Carpenter (Edward)

Carpenter (Edward)

A group of autographs letters and notes from the poet and early activist for gay rights Edward Carpenter, all addressed to Mr C.F. Padel in Carlisle, including: one card to Mr Padel, asking if he could obtain a copy of 'Towards Industrial Freedom' as it is out of print, 20 February 1924; a letter thanking the recipient and his wife "for the copy just received of Towards Industrial Freedom" and saying "It's receipt is a great boon to me, for I was at a loss where to turn for one. Looking over the volume afresh after an interval, I think it is not so bad after all! and I shall now press Stanely Unwin, the publisher, to have it reprinted ere long - though doubtless he will make difficulties in the way of doing so", 24 February 1924; another letter reading "Excuse me for writing in pencil, but I am still in bed- a good part of the day - with a wobbly heart. I hope however to be much better by the time you come to this part, say some time next month. And I much hope you will call. Talking to friendly friends doe not tire me. The book on China is excellent (How clever the French are at that sort of thing!) and I thank you for it", 12 March [1924]; one later card thanking Padel for sending a book on Abraham Lincoln "Abe Lincoln has always been one of my heroes; and once, to a rather conservative assembly, I lectured on him!", 30 June 1927; and another thank-you card; 6 pages in total, v.s., Millthorpe, Mountside, Guildford (5)
