FORE-EDGE PAINTING - John MILTON (1608-74).  Paradise Lost. Illustrated by Gustave Dore. Cassell, Petter & Galpin, [c. 1880]. Folio. Title printed in red and black, wood-engraved plates by Gustave Dore (occasional light spotting). VERY FINELY BOUND in elaborate contemporary panelled red morocco gilt by Bain, the covers elaborately decorated in gilt with small circular coloured morocco onlays at each corner, the spine with 5 raised bands, dentelles, gilt edges (lightly rubbed). WITH FINE DOUBLE "FORE-EDGE" PAINTINGS TO ALL THE EDGES, incorporating 8 illustrations (two doubled on the fore-edge, and one doubled on each side-edge) of scenes from Milton's epic poem. It is highly unusual to find double paintings on all of the edges of a book in this manner.
