AN ANTIQUE MELAS PRAYER RUG, TURKEY

The rust field divided to two long panels with various angular and hooked floral motfs. Inner light blue hooked panel frame. Mihrab above with angular lozenges and checkered dots. In broad rust border of multicoloured hooked lozenges angular rosettes between stepped beige frame and barber-pole stripes, approx: 5ft.8in. x 3ft.3in.(173cm. x 130cm.) Early type, ca.1850's with very nicely drawn archaic design. This rug has wear to the pile and old repairs. Possibly loss of narrow guard stripes. Selvages cord repalced. Ends with short fringes, secured. Despite imprfection this rug is in fair usable condition. Very good example for early weave for Milas type. Attractive piece.
