A MAKONDE BODY MASK, TANZANIA  Life-size, the mask depicts the swollen belly and enlarged breasts of a pregnant woman, with the upper thighs below, with scarification marks on the torso and belly, 65cm high.  Footnotes: Such masks are used in the initiation rites of young men of the Makonde people, during which they are taught about the sex and the obligations of married life.
