Martin Engelbrecht [Augsburg] (1684-1756)
'THE PALACIAL COURTROOM' c.1750
A fine series depicting a Palacial Court scene. A set of 6 copper engraved card-backed, cut away sheets combining to create an early peep show, [105×142 mm] with original hand-colouring;

The cut aways depict; [1] A classically decorated room, with semi-columns and a richly decorated portal surronded by arches on both sides;[2] an aedicule with female figures sculptures framed by semi-columns. A woman in aristocratic clothes to the left and two men in ancient suits of armour to the right; [3] a similar room, with a fresco's decorated ceiling, and a man standing on the left side; [4] another similar scene, with more sculptures on the walls, and on the right side stands a woman in a long aristocratic dress; [5] a view in distance of a long gallery, articulated by arches gives the entire composition the feeling of depth and greatness of the palace; [6] in the perspective centre, the king sits on his throne, in a richly decorated room, similar to those in previous sheets, with statues in aedicule, semi-columns and stucco decorations on the walls. A woman kneels down in front of the king, and two soldiers look at the scene.
