A notebook belonging to William Collas of Jersey, in French and English, with varied contents including: numerous mathematical problems and solutions with decorative initials and calligraphy; watercolour landscape and dragons, serpents, animals (pasted in); Christian poetry; epitaph from his mother’s and other family tombs; passages of family history and anecdotes; letters; antiquarian and heraldic interest; 146 pp., spine lacking with some loose leaves, small 4to, 1820s & 30s (dated 1822 to front pastedown)
*** Includes a draft of a long letter to a legal figure regarding the unfair reduction of Collas’ father’s pew at St. Martin’s church by the rector and curate, sanctioned by the Archbishop of Canterbury: ‘to show your Lordship how difficult it is for an oppressed man who seeks redress to obtain it when men in power betray the trust reposed on them’.
