A DEVOTIONAL VAISHNAVA MURTI TRIAD
PROPERTY FROM A PRIVATE GERMAN COLLECTION
India, 19th century
Comprising two brass statues and a third made of white metal, possibly a zinc alloy, the two male figures wearing tight trousers and several accessories including armbands, necklaces and chokers, their foreheads marked with the typical Vaishnava Urdhva Pundra (three vertical lines), the female figure with similar accessories but wearing a low sari with pleats in the front, each character featuring a bulbous knot on top of their heads, reminiscent of the Buddha's ushnisha, their lobes and hands perforated and once filled with earrings and attributes, possibly representing the triad of Rama - Sita - Lakshmana, each set on a removable stepped square pedestal engraved with geometric motifs, the tallest 30.5cm high.
