Tristram James Ellis, painter and illustrator known for his detailed and vibrant landscape paintings, particularly those depicting scenes from the Middle East and the Mediterranean. His work offers a unique glimpse into the landscapes and cultures of the regions he traveled to during the late 19th century.
In the 1870s and 1880s, Ellis traveled extensively through the Middle East, including Syria, Palestine, Egypt, and Turkey. He also spent time in the Mediterranean, visiting places like Cyprus and the Greek islands. His experiences during these travels deeply influenced his work, leading to a series of paintings that captured the landscapes, architecture, and daily life of the regions

Publications: Ellis's travels also led to several publications. He produced illustrated books and travelogues that combined his paintings with descriptions of the places he visited. One of his notable works is "On a Raft, and Through the Desert: The Narrative of an Artist's Journey through Northern Syria and Kurdistan, by the Tigris to Mosul and Baghdad, and of a Return Journey across the Desert by the Euphrates and Palmyra to Damascus, over the Anti-Lebanon to Baalbek and to the Coast of the Mediterranean" (1879), which detailed his travels through the Middle East
