WINDERMERE LAKE, SCROLLING PANORAMA, 1889

Printed map on linen, measuring approx. 400 x 1440mm, hand-coloured, with a scale of 6 inches to a Statute Mile. Housed in the original glazed wooden cabinet, measuring 270 x 435 x 60 mm, with winders on right at top and bottom, allowing the user to scroll either up or down, and mirror- hooks on reverse.

Rare survival of this scrolling panorama showing the many points of reference along the length and breadth of lake Windermere, drawn to a scale of 6 inches : 1 mile. As well as the names of places and river tributaries, also included are the boat-houses, rocks, crags, piers, landings, hotels, ferries, heights above sea level, etc. This map possibly originally hung in one of the hotels along the lake, a handy reference tool for tourists and walkers planning their days out.
