A gimmel ring is a ring with two or three hoops which fit to form a complete ring. The word comes from Latin 'Gemellus' which means twins.

The ring inscription relates to the meeting of Wellington, Blücher and the Prince of Orange after the Battle of Waterloo on 18 June 1815 near La Belle Alliance.

By repute, the ring is thought to have been gifted by novelist E.M Forster to the vendor's paternal grandmother.
