A GROUP OF GERMAN GLASSWARE, LATE 19TH TO EARLY 20TH CENTURY

A GROUP OF GERMAN GLASSWARE, LATE 19TH TO EARLY 20TH CENTURY, including; a weinbowle (punchbowl) with cover and ladle by Fritz Heckert in Petersdorf, German Empire, circa 1900, decoration designed by Willi Meitzen; five short Roemers decorated by Fritz Heckert, believed to be pattern no. 680, supplied by Josephinehütte in Schreiberhau, German Empire; and five larger Roemers from Theresienthal, Bavarian Forest near Zwiesel, German Empire, one with wine barrel decoration commemorating the 500th anniversary of the Heidelberg University.

Dimensions: the punch bowl 26.5cm high, 22cm wide, the pair of roemers 18.3cm high

Notes: Willi Meitzen's gnomes appeared on a number of other Heckert glass patterns at the period when the punch bowl was produced, including various Roemers, and delicate Sektbecher (sparkling wine beakers).

The Josephinenhütte Roemers with the wrap-around grapevine decoration were available as Schneemallerei (snow painting) in opaque white enamel.

The 5 Roemers in the back row of our photograph are from Theresienthal, in the Bavarian Forest near Zwiesel, Bavaria, German Empire. The Roemer having the wine barrel decoration commemorates the 500th anniversary of the Heidelberg University. The barrel is the 'Riesen Faß', or giant barrel, that is housed in the Heidelberg castle. This decoration appeared on a number of Theresienthal glass patterns (see Der Glasfreund, Heft 22 – 2006, pp. 15-17). The first and third Roemers in this row utilize glass pattern no. RAI, while the fourth Roemer utilizes glass pattern no. RAII. This Roemer was also decorated in the Fritz Heckert workshop. The fifth Roemer appears to be Josephinenhütte glass pattern no. 812.
