PHILIP WEST (BRITISH/SPANISH 1949-1997), untitled, 1973, mid 20th century surrealist oil on canvas, signed and dated, (68 x 61cm) (ARTIST RESALE RIGHTS MAY APPLY) Notes: Some 200 surrealist works by West were bequeathed, after his untimely death, to the Eugenio Granell Foundation in Santiago de Compostella. Provenance: John Lyle (1932-2002) collection, then by descent. Friendships with Roland Penrose, Jacques Brunius, Edouard Mesens and George Melly led to their enthusiastic engagement in the extraordinary 'Exeter Festival of Modern Art' in 1967. Lyle's acceptance and endorsement by the last lions of the original group proved inconvenient to the loudest young pretenders laying claim to a movement they thought was safely dead. The subsequent exchange of vitriolic tracts spurred Lyle on to publish ten editions of 'Transformaction' magazine, a truly international forum and the last battle cry of Surrealism in England.
