Early on he had the opportunity to travel abroad. He went to the East to the former European colonial areas in Dutch India and later British India. He established his reputation as a portrait painter of both local and European rulers. This resulted in his being nicknamed, the rajah painter. His paintings were skilfully and traditionally done, often in a splendid, sweeping style with a sense of narrative and the dramatic.
