PAUL OF AEGINA (c. 625 - c. 690). [Greek title, followed by:] Medici optimi, libri septem. In principio singulorum librorum omnia indicantur, quae in eo continentur libro. [Colophon:] Basel: "Per Andream Cratandrum," 1538. Folio. Woodcut device on title and on verso of final leaf, text in Greek throughout, headpieces and initials (lower third of title torn away and repaired with loss of part of woodcut and imprint, corner of first leaf of text [a2] torn away and repaired with some loss, some mainly marginal worming, some light browning and spotting). Contemporary calf-backed marbled boards (rubbed and scuffed). Provenance: some early marginalia; "tres rare" (old inscription followed by illegible initials on front free endpaper). The author, born on the island of Aegina, who went on to practice medicine and surgery in Alexandra, is today considered a pioneer of plastic surgery. The first edition, or editio princeps, was printed by Aldus in Venice in 1528. With Girolamo Mercuriale's Medici ac Philosophi, nostro seculo praeclarissimi (Frankfurt, 1602, contemporary vellum).
