Solitude is one of the first paintings that Laila Shawa painted after a 12 year interruption in her career (spent on a building project in her hometown of Gaza). This work is the only one which combines her abstract city-scapes with a linear drawing of the nude figure, both styles she had used prior to stopping painting in her previous period, but never together.
