A heavy early 19th century Ottoman Turkish silver coffee pot, circa 1830 Tughra of Mahmud II (1808-39)

Of baluster form upon three shaped feet with chased leaf form junctions. The spout with a beaded underside opposite an acanthus leaf capped C scroll handle. The hinged domed lid surmounted by a detachable cast and chased finial formed as a flower with leafy surround. Marked to the side, each foot, handle, and bezel of lid with tughra excluding figure 90 (used 1808-34), assay scrapes throughout. Also later marked to base and lid with French control marks.

Height – 27 cm / 10.65 inches

Weight – 1128 grams / 36.27 ozt

The figure of 90 was added to the Tughra mark later in the reign of Mahmud II in 1834, see Kurkman, G. (1996), Ottoman Silver Marks, Istanbul: Mathusalem, p.58. The sah mark found on later Ottoman silver was introduced in 1844.
