A Mughal horse chamfron made of ferrous metal, India, 17th century.
The chamfron would protect the horse's forehead and face and would have been a vital component of a noble steed's barding, a luxurious ensemble of armor for both horse and rider. The exceptional craftsmanship and utilitarian ornamentation speak to the importance placed on cavalry within the Mughal military and the emphasis on functional aesthetics during this period.
