IRELAND – TYSON’S RISING 1600 ms account of action by the Thomas Butler, Earl of Ormonde, Lt General of Elizabeth’s forces in Ireland in what is now known as Tyson’s Rising. The account, written in English on two sides of a folio sheet bears further marginal annotation. The paper is slightly water damaged, but the text remains clear and legible throughout. The document mentions action against Brian Bengh, a rebel commander, in woods near to the Abbey of Leix in which both Bengh and Ormonde’s brother James Butler were killed, with the rebels subsequently decapitating Butler and sending his head to Ormonde. No date but the watermark suggests that the paper dates from late 16th/early 17th c, so the account may be contemporaneous.
