A George I Britannia standard snuff box, London 1716 by HA crown above, mullet below (Unidentified Grimwade 3598) overstriking another, with an anchor

Of cartouche form, the hinged lid with an embossed scallop shell, the hinge area with near contemporaneous engraved scroll decoration. The obverse with a later engraved inscription William Smith 1728. Later gilt interior. Fully marked to interior, lions head erased to base edge.

Length – 8.1 cm / 3.2 inches

Weight – 58 grams / 1.86 ozt

The mark Grimwade 3598 is recorded as on a snuffbox in 1717. There are nine marks listed in Grimwade that contain an anchor; William Gossen (861), Thomas Port (2209), Philip Rollos jun (2392), Jospeh Ward (2989), James Wethered (3096), Unknown Samuel Margas? (3796), Unknown (3569a) and unknown (3850 & 3851). The named men are recorded as large workers and thus not candidates for this box realistically, the closest in shape anchor is that of Unknown 3850/3851.
