Many of the caricatures in the present lot by Jean-Pierre Dantan were illustrated in Figures of Fun, The Caricature Statuettes of Jean-Pierre Dantan by Janet Seligman, London, Oxford University Press, 1957.
Jean de Paleologu (born in Bucharest in 1855) was a caricaturist who studied in London and Paris. He first exhibited in London in 1891. He signed his drawings 'Pal'. He exhibited in Paris in 1900 and 1926. He was probably a member of the Savage Club where this group of 5 drawings were made. He contributed to Vanity Fair and Strand magazines.
