A RARE PAIR OF KOREAN EMBROIDERED 'SUN AND MOON, BIRDS AND FLOWERS' FOUR-PANEL SCREENS

朝鮮時期 十九世紀刺繡「日月花」屏風一對

A pair of four-panel screen making up a full eight-panel screen, depicting the common Korean theme of 'Sun and Moon, Birds and Flowers' on silk embroidery on paper ground. One set of panels depicting pairs of birds amongst various flora, including mandaring ducks, pheasants, peacocks and woodpeckers. The other panel depicting various birds including magpies, pheasants and peacocks set within a variety of flora including prunus, pomegranates and also depicting the sun and the moon. The paired birds here symbolise a happy, faithful marriage, whereas the flowers, including prunus, magnolia, lotus and chrysanthemum represent the four seasons. The screen was probably used in the women's quarters of a late-19th-century to early-20th century Korean home.

The embroidered panels 63cm high, 33cm wide;

the panels 89cm high, 37.5cm wide;

overall 150cm wide.

G. St. G. M. Gompertz was a renown historian of both Chinese and Korean Ceramics. He is known for his generosity in gifting his astonishing collection of Koryo period celadon ceramics to the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, which is generally considered to be the best collection of Koryo period celadon wares outside of Korea.

G. St. G. M. Gompertz는 중국과 한국 도자기의 유명한 역사가였습니다. 그는 고려시대 청자 컬렉션을 케임브리지 피츠윌리엄 박물관에 관대하게 기증한 것으로 유명합니다. 피츠윌리엄 박물관은 일반적으로 한국 이외의 고려시대 청자 컬렉션 중 최고로 평가됩니다.

St. G. M.·貢佩茨為一位著名的中國及韓國陶瓷歷史學家。他以慷慨地將其高麗時期青釉瓷器收藏品捐贈給劍橋菲茨威廉博物館而聞名,該收藏普遍被視為韓國以外最好的高麗時期瓷器收藏品。

The Cleveland Museum of Art, exhibited another similar screen, 'Gold Needles: Embroidery Arts from Korea', 2020, borrowed from the Seoul Museum of Craft Art from the bequest of Mr. Dong-hwa Huh (1926−2018) and Ms. Young-suk Park (b. 1932), who both shared a passion for preserving and collecting Korean textiles;

The above mentioned screen is on permanent exhibition at the Seoul Museum of Craft Art, Embroidery in Bloom room showcasing selected works from Huh Mr. Dong-hwa's and Ms. Park Young-sook's collection.
