THE HOUSTON MOUNT EVEREST EXPEDITION, 1933

THE HOUSTON MOUNT EVEREST EXPEDITION, 1933

A group of three framed silver gelatin prints, flush-mounted to archival board, published in 1998 by the Discovery Gallery, London, each image measuring 30 x 40cm, each from the edition /600, with Discovery Gallery edition stamp board verso. Each framed, frames measuring 51.5 x59.5cm.

The Houston Mount Everest Expedition marked the first flight over Mount Everest (8,848 metres high), taking place in 1933. Alongside the expedition's technological and aviation achievements, the team also set out to photographically map the terrain of Everest to aid in the planning of the 1933 British Mount Everest expedition. The photographs were made public in the early 1950s, and were used by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay to plan their successful 1953 ascent to the Everest summit.
