Purpose of job:          To provide an efficient and effective photography service to Chiswick Auctions, in order to produce photographs of objects and works of art for online / digital platforms

Chiswick Auctions is a privately owned, well-established London auction house which is fast becoming a major player in the international art market. With 20 specialist departments, regular dedicated and themed sales are held across a breadth of specialisms. In addition, monthly Interiors, Homes and Antiques sales contribute to a busy calendar of 80 auctions per year that cater for all levels of the market.

The main headquarters is based in Chiswick, with a showroom in South Kensington (CSK), and with regular valuation events held across the UK. Chiswick Auctions employs around 57 staff.

This position will work in the team of four dedicated in-house photographers, shooting a range of objects including ceramics and glass, large pieces of furniture, paintings, Islamic and Indian fine art, traditional and contemporary design, and sculpture. You’ll be used to working in a fast-paced environment and have a background in retail, commercial, still life or fashion photography. A can-do attitude coupled with a strong interest in arts and cultural heritage, and a desire to build on and widen your current portfolio are also essential to success in the role.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:




  • Taking photographic shots of a range of objects, including setting up correct studio lighting


  • Liaising with specialists on their property, and communicating with specialists and others as to deadlines


  • Working as a team to ensure that objects are shot correctly and to deadline


  • Edit photos for accuracy and impact


  • Organise files efficiently, renaming as appropriate and upload to various platforms



  • Ensure compliance with all internal policies and procedures and any relevant external bodies or processes


  • Participate in organization-wide activities and processes, and develop internal contacts, networks and interactions as appropriate; read the minutes of meetings as appropriate


  • Carry out other duties as required by the Directors and Managing Directors


Person Specification


Essential skills and experience


  • At least three years’ work experience as a professional photographer, working in a fast-paced environment, with demanding internal customers


  • Experience gained in retail, commercial, still life, fashion or luxury good environments


  • Proven consistent, punctual and skilful photography skills, including an ability to be creative and demonstrate some flair and originality


  • Ability to shoot at a fast pace while ensuring compliance with quality standards and guidelines


  • Experience with shooting with a Canon camera


  • Superior customer service skills


  • Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills


  • Excellent writing skills in English and attention to detail


  • Ability to work to tight auction deadlines


  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to think creatively


  • Excellent knowledge of the Microsoft 365 Suite, and the Adobe suite including Photoshop; ability to learn Chiswick Auctions’ systems


  • Physically fit and able to move large objects e.g. sculpture, furniture in order to photograph them



Desirable skills and experience


  • Qualifications: first degree in a relevant subject


  • Experience in the field, either at auction, or within a environment handling the type of objects handled by Chiswick Auctions


  • Familiarity with Mac OS
