For more than 40 years, Lady Barbara Speake created a world in miniature.
The Lady Barbara Speake Collection of Dolls’ Houses and Miniatures brings together 119 lots from a collection assembled with extraordinary imagination and attention to detail. From Saxon dwellings and Tudor houses to Victorian shops, Art Deco interiors and 1960s scenes, the collection traces changing architecture, interiors and everyday life across the centuries.

Yet these were never intended simply as dolls’ houses to be played with. For Barbara, they were decorative objects and, above all, an opportunity to create. Each became a setting in which furniture, wallpaper, pictures, objects and figures could be layered together to evoke a particular period, place or story.
Barbara Speake was already a significant creative force long before she began collecting dolls’ houses. Founder of the Barbara Speake Stage School in West London, she spent much of her life immersed in theatre and performance, helping to nurture generations of young performers. That instinct for scene-setting and storytelling can be felt throughout her miniature collection.
Her interest in dolls’ houses began relatively late. At the age of 48, she visited a dolls’ house shop in Eton and was sufficiently taken with what she saw that she wrote to her parents asking for something from the shop for her birthday. It marked the beginning of a collecting passion that would continue for the next four decades.
There was an earlier encounter. Barbara had been given a dolls’ house by her father when she was around five years old and promptly rejected it, beliving it simply wasnt up to scratch, the coals stuck to the wall, it was not made to her exacting standards, that were present even from a very young age.
Many of the houses were commissioned and made especially for Barbara. Once the structures were complete, the interiors took shape gradually. Furniture and miniature objects were sourced at specialist fairs or made specifically for individual rooms and scenes.
The result is less a conventional collection of dolls’ houses than a series of miniature interiors.

Some recreate recognisable historical periods. Others capture ordinary places and moments: a bakery, haberdashery, fish and chip shop, pub, school, artist’s studio, hospital or 1970s living room. Elsewhere, imagination takes over in a Wild West saloon, a Space Age house and elaborate period dioramas. The catalogue moves from a Saxon hovel and medieval armourer’s workshop through Georgian, Regency and Victorian interiors to Art Deco and modernist design.
There are also more personal scenes. An interwar detached house was based on Barbara's childhood home on Old Oak Road in Acton, complete with figures representing members of her family. These autobiographical details transform parts of the collection into miniature snapshots of her own life.
While much of the collection was created to Barbara’s specifications during the late 20th century, it also contains an original 19th-century dolls’ house.
Woodlands Villas, Bespoke built dolls house - 19th Century - Estimate £800 - £1,600
Woodlands Villas was acquired by Barbara specifically to complement her more modern collection. The two-storey house retains its interiors, staircase, furnishings and figures, offering a fascinating comparison between a historic dolls’ house and the meticulously researched environments Barbara later commissioned herself.

At the other end of the stylistic spectrum are houses inspired by 20th-century architecture and design, including a 1930s Art Deco detached house, a German modernist house and a 1960s Space Age interior. The breadth of the collection reveals that Barbara was interested not only in miniatures themselves but in the history of how people lived, decorated and furnished their homes.
Victorian bisque dolls and miniature figures populate many of these spaces, but they are secondary to the rooms around them. The pleasure lies in looking closely: noticing how a room has been furnished, how an object has been placed and how the smallest detail contributes to the period or story Barbara wanted to create.
Perhaps most unusually, Barbara's collection was never publicly displayed during her lifetime.
For the first time, the houses and miniature scenes are being opened to view together, not in a conventional auction showroom but at Grey Timbers in Ealing, where the collection was housed. Seeing the works in this setting offers an opportunity to understand their scale and the extraordinary amount of thought that went into building an entire collection room by room.
The sale ultimately reveals as much about its collector as the objects themselves. Barbara Speake spent a lifetime working with performance, imagination and young creative talent. In these miniature worlds, that same instinct for character and storytelling found another outlet.
