A GREEK SILVER REPOUSSÉ FOOTED DISH
Greece, Western Ottoman Provinces, 17th - 18th century

Of circular shape, resting on a flared conical foot, expanding into a wide flat rim worked in repoussé with a row of six animals and birds, including an eagle, a dove, a rooster, a dog, a lion and a dragon, the dragon looking in the opposite direction of all other animals, the animal decoration interspersed with high-stem floral bouquets and rosette sprays, and framed within volutes and rosette bands around the rim, the concave centre plain and possibly used to contain liquids during baptisms or Christian liturgical ceremonies involving the blessing of the water, 17cm diam., 167GR.
