Shaw (George Bernard) Saint Joan: a Chronicle Play, 'Rough Proof - Unpublished' printed on upper cover, last leaf soiled and frayed, original printed wrappers, spine defective, and lower cover lacking, stitching loosening at either end, Sybil Thorndike's copy, the upper cover bearing the purple stamp of Lewis Casson, in the original green morocco pull-off case, 8vo, Constable, 1924. Provenance: Shaw created the role of Joan for Sybil Thorndike, which proved to be the zenith of her career, as also of her husband Lewis Casson, who directed the play alongside Shaw. The half title is inscribed by Sybil Thorndike ("This is Sybil Thorndike's book & anyone who takes it is a liar & a thief & a murderer to boot […] please return as fast as you can!”) and later by Shaw ("Mr T.J. Keely having apparently disregarded this communication and purloined this book, expects the author to endorse the transaction. Accordingly – G. Bernard Shaw 5/4/24”).
