Of tapering cylindrical form upon a prominent lobed foot. The acanthus moulded C scroll handle with a trifurcated junction, leading to a hinged dome lid surmounted by an associated detachable disc finial centred with a rose surrounded by various shells, marked with lion passant and maker's mark only for London circa 1860 by William Smily. The body with cast and applied swags of hops hanging from lion masks adjoined by a girdle. The front with a slightly later engraved presentation inscription reading “Presented by messrs W. H Jones & Co to the Behar Mounted Rifles won by Rowland Hudson April 1875”, all with scroll flourishes. Gilt interior with a drill pierced straining section. Marked underneath ALLAN&HAYES with crescent tally mark, also prick dot etched B862161.

This inscription refers to the company of William H Jones of Mozufferpore Tirhoot (1792-1842). Whose first wife Agnes Jones (1804-1841) died on the 18th September 1841 (The Bengal Obituary: W. Thacker & Company, 1851). He then married Mary Ann Hayes on the 1st April 1842, described as a senior merchant of Mozufferpore Tirhoot (The Asiatic journal and monthly register for British and foreign India, China and Australasia, Volume 38). William Jones died on the 11th Nov 1842.
May Ann as a widow later marrying a William Bedall Esq, attorney at law in Calcultta on Dec 26th 1854 (The Indian News and Chronicle of Eastern Affaires: 1854).
The Bihar Light Horse was raised in 1862 and formed part of the Cavalry Reserve in the British Indian Army. The regimental headquarters was at Muzaffarpur (Mozufferpore) in Bihar.
Captain Roland Hudson of Belmont House, co. Westmeath (1853-1920), only surviving son of William Brereton Hudson (1814-1879) and his wife Catherine Larken (d. 1886) the daughter of T.J. Larken Esq of Dublin. He married Elizabeth MacFarlane Barclay (1860-1943) on the 30th Oct 1884 in Muzaffarpur, she the daughter of Thomas Barclay Esq (1811-1906) of Dornach, Skelbo Castle, Sutherland and Alexandrina Begg (1811-1906), had issue. Captain Hudson later became Grand Juror of Westmeath. His half-brother was Colonel Sir William Brereton Hudson KCIE (1843-1913).
