The Siege of Paris, 1871

A group of 7 albumen prints, image size 16.7 x22.7cm (smallest) to 25.7 x39cm (largest), pasted down onto period card, card size 33 x42.5cm, by Disdéri (5) and Quinet (1), each with typed signature and manuscript caption lower margin, (4) with Disdéri studio's stamp lower margin. Subjects include images of the city destroyed during the Franco-Prussian War, such as the House of Parliament near the Pont de Sèvres; the royal residence Château de Saint-Cloud; a view of Rue de Lille; the Palace of the State Council, among others.

Housed in a brown morocco archival folder, with gilt embossed lettering on the front cover Paris. Siège de Paris et Commune 1871.

The siege took place from September 1870 to January 1871, ending in the capture of the city by the North German Confederation. After the capture of Napoleon III, the Second French Empire collapsed, and the Third French Republic was proclaimed under the provisional Government of National Defense. The new government decided to continue the war. After months of intense bombardment, the Government of National Defense signed an armistice with the North German Confederation.
