Casamicciola Earthquake, Italy [Album], 1883

An album of 24 albumen prints, image size 20.5 x26cm, pasted down to album pages, overall measuring 33 x43cm, each numbered, titled [in Italian], and signed in the negative; comprising images of the damage of an earthquake that occurred in Casamicciola (Italy) on 28th July 1883, destroying the majority of the buildings in the village. Subjects include views of the ruins of the town hall; the Church of the Assumption; various villas, and hotels, such as The Central Hotel; The Green Villa; and The Russian Villa, among others, depicting men at work in the rubble. Particularly touching is an image of a man on his knees praying among the ruins of a church.
