TWO PROFILE PORTRAITS OF INDIAN RULERS
Jaipur and Kota, Rajasthan, North-Western India, 20th century

Opaque pigments heightened with gold and silver on paper and cardboard, comprising a small-sized profile portrait of Sri Maharaja Man Singh wearing an elaborate headdress with raised pearls and gems, the recto with a rectangular cartouche filled with black ink Urdu invocations in mashq script on a red ground, 20cm x 14.7cm; and a large-sized profile portrait of Kishor Singh Ji, a ruler of Kota, set within an oval frame with lush rose blossoms on each corner, 36.6cm x 28.4cm.

Both paintings bear Devanagari inscriptions with incorrect information. Man Singh was not the ruler of Jaipur, as mentioned in the inscription at the bottom; and Kishor Singh was not the son of Umed Singh. This suggests these 20th-century paintings were most likely made for the export market for tourists unable to read the Devanagari inscriptions and contextualise their content.
