Views of Canton, incl. Afong Lai, 1860s-1880s

A group of 17 albumen prints, image sizes 21 x 27cm (smallest) to 22.5 x 29.5cm (largest), pasted down to the original album card, overall measuring 35.5 x45.5cm, some captioned in unknown handwriting in ink lower central, some with typed caption label and brief description in lower central margin. Photographers include Afong Lai [Studio] (1839-1890), and Dutton and Michaels (active c.1863-1865). Subjects include the front division of the Academy for Public Examination; a view of an execution ground, called Ma-tow; the Whampoa Pagoda; the Confucius Temple; the Residence of the English Consul; the Huaisheng Mosque, one of the oldest Islamic institutions in China; the entrance of the Lee-ming-koon Garden; a studio portrait of a woman and a girl in traditional Cantonese clothes; among others. Including a print depicting the Flower Pagoda, image size 22.5 x29.5, by Dutton & Michaels, signed, and captioned in the negative; as well as a print attributed to Dutton & Michaels, depicting a five-storied pagoda on the city walls, with a view of the White Cloud Mountains in the distance, image size 22 x 27.5cm.
