A late 19th century Austrian silver and enameled snuff box, Vienna circa 1870 by Hermann Ratzersdorfer (1845 - 1894)

Compressed circular form with a pull off lid. The body with painted enamel scenes of classical depictions including a satyr drinking a libation around recumbent maidens, putti with bow and arrow and various other figures. The lid with a centaur emerging form a river carrying a maiden on his back. The underside with a putto mask surrounded by arabesque scrolls with foliage. The interior of base and lid marked ‘seaweed’ pattern painted decoration. Marked to the lid bezel only with maker’s mark and town mark.
