A collection of letters by prominent scientists, scholars, philantropists and educationalists, comprising: Sir Herbert Baker (letter to the journalist Winfred Sykes, saying in part "I think the turning points in my career were the long speech in the House of Commons by Mr now Sir Basil Peto supporting my work; the 2 memorials signed on my behalf, 1st signed by several of London's leading surgeons and 2nd by over 300 M.Ps and ex M.Ps which resulted in my knighthood", one page, with envelope and autographed slip, 1936); Louisa Barwell (two letters to Mr Bells, both discussing autograph collecting, seven pages, 1878); Enrico Brunetti (signed card mentioning various specimens, one page, 6 April 1922); Thomas Bell (letter to Lady Maria, declining an invitation as "I am in daily expectation of the death of a very dear nephew of mine, Dr Hyde Salter who has now been seriously ill for many weeks", four pages, 19 Augsut n.y.); George Chrystal (signed university lecture card); William Jenner (two letters, one thanking Mr Bell for identifying a picture owned by Jenner who intends to give it to Prince Leopold, 1 April 1878; the other asking for recommendation to a good French clock maker; four pages in total, 16 March 1881); William Hardie (signed university lecture card); John Wiliam Strutt (returning a document "for which I have no use", one page, 22 October 1915); Max Muller (thanking the recipient for some books on Australia, one page, 24 January 1888); George W. Prothero (signed university lecture card); Jospeh Sturge (saying he will be gald to meet the recipient at the Anti-Slavery Office the following Wednesday, one page, 27 May 1846); Dr. Veitch (congratulating Sir Herbert Taylor on his appointment as Adjutant General of the Forces, two pages, 25 August 1828); Rev. William Rogers (three letters, two inviting the recipient to lunch, one expressing his despair about a flower show, six pages in total, n.d.); Stanhope (inviting a visit by Delane, Editor of the Times, one page, n.d.); William Turner (signed university lecture card); Thomas Graham (regretting he was out when the recipient called and enthusing over a pamphlet entitled 'The Testing of Poisons', three pages, 11 November 1856); Lyon Playfair (signed House of Commons Gallery pass and four letters, mostly concerning the Royal Normal School for the Blind, twelve pages in total, 5 February 1887- 21 January 1896); all in very good condition, v.s. mid-19th century-early 20th century (25)
