A pair of French cast-iron figural torchères, after models by Mathurin Moreau (French, 1822-1912), early 20th century

entitled 'Negresse' and 'Egyptienne', cast by Val d'Osne, standing and supporting a torch issuing a frosted glass flambeau shade, raised on a circular socle and square plinth cast with cartouches to the angles; the figure of the Egyptian woman signed 'VAL D’OSNE' to the front.

Dimensions: 178 cm  high (excluding shades)

Purchased by the owner at Christie’s, 19th Century Furniture, Sculpture and Ceramics, London, February 2005, lot 15

Cf. Maurice Rheims, L'Univers des Bronzes, Paris, 1978, p. 34, where an engraving from the Val d’Osne ateliers depicts an identical pair of cast-iron figural torchères.
