Midnight was an hour, an age ago; the time for masks and formalities generally, is over. In the stately Pump Room the dignitaries of the city of Bath are still twirling delicately over the ballroom floor. Outside, the night air is caressingly warm, the Roman stone impossibly cold against her shoulder. The music winds faintly down the steps. The alcove is a thsuand years old; the story is much older than that.
