A 19th century album featuring envelope panels, notes, letters and clipped autographs (pasted onto album pages) signed by various prominent historical figures, including: William Frederick Duke of Gloucester (signed envelope panel); Leopold I King of Belgium (clipped signature); Sophia Matilda of Gloucester (clipped signature); William Howley Archbishop of Canterbury (signed envelope panel); the Duke of Wellington (autograph letter signed as "Arthur Wellesley", reading in part "I spoke to Canning this day about the Office of Secretary of Legation which you mentioned to me. He said what we all know to be perfectly true, that there are but few courts at present at which the King has Ministers and that at the courts all the places are already filled and he does not see any chnace of a vacancy", four pages, London, 4 April 1807); Lawrence Alma-Tadema (autograph letter thanking for some game he has received, one page, Towshend House, n.d.); Alois, Graf von Kielmansegg; Earl Gray; Charles Keene (autograph letter sending "the only sketch I have of the drawing I made for Punch, one page, Inigo Road, n.d.); Sir Frederick Leighton (three autograph notes); Robert Peel (loose slip); Lord Melbourne (signed envelope panel); Lord Byron (signed envelope panel postmarked "29 April 1814", severe browning); Charles James Fox; Sir John Conroy (autograph letter to Lady Stepney, expressing is desire to be of use to her, one page, n.d.), Sir William Sidney Smith (autograph letter mentioning a facsimile of an ancient greek inscription he is sending to the Duke of Sussex, two pages, Paris 13 August 1833), Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy (signed envelope panel); Sir John Franklin (signed envelope panel); Faustin Souloque (rare document signed as President of Haiti, one page, red wax seal, document entirely affixed onto album page, folio, 3 October 1848); Balthazar Inginac; Napoleon Bonaparte (document signed as Emperor of the French, one page, a few closed tears, folio); the Prince of Polignac; Agnes Strickland (autograph letter); Field Marshal Roberts; Benjamin d'Israeli; Thomas Lawrence (autograph letter saying declining to sign a petition "I feel that I cannot with propriety give that serious attention to the facts of this petition that my signature would obviosuly require", three pages, Russell Square, n.y.); George Hayter (autograph letter mentioning attenting the opera, three pages, 14 Montague Place, 15 July 1847); George Cattermole (autograph letter); George Cruikshank (letter declining an invitation, one page, 8vo); John Leech (clipped signature); Franz Liszt (signature on a complimentary slip); Robert Stephenson (clipped signature); Michael Faraday (clipped signature), Christopher Wren (losse signature clipped from a document) and many others, mostly British politicians and ambassadors, also including a few printed letters or copies and a few wood engraved signatures (Joshua Reynolds, Benjamin Franklin and Georg Friedrich Handel); partially disbound, some letters loosely inserted, dark red morocco with gilt decoration to boards, age-related wear, brass clasp, folio, late 19th century
