An archive of manuscripts, letters, studies on Egypt and hieroglyphs, related to Thomas Cave (1842-1933), engineer and amateur Egyptologist; including his translations of hieroglyphs and notes on Egyptian language; correspondence with scholars and academics, and members of the Worchestershire Historical Society, such as William Oxley; his notes and handbook from College; a copy of the Magazine 'Sphere'; L'Egypte. Du Caire a Philae, [French edition], by Georges Ebers, Paris, 1881; The Book of Common Prayer and Administration of the Sacraments, Cambridge 1811, donated to Thomas Cave by Rev. Newbys, as stated on the back cover; and a selection the 'Worcestershire Historical Society Rules, and List of Members' booklets for years 1910-1930 [incomplete].
Thomas Cave was born in 1842 in Nottingham. He moved to Leicestershire in 1861, and later to Kidderminster. He was a member of the Worchestershire Historical Society. Cave contributed to the growth, cataloguing, and research of the renowned Egyptian collection at the Corporation Museum and Art Gallery of Leicester, as shown by the various letters from Montagu Browne, Curator of the Leicester Museum in the early 20th century.
