James Burrell Smith predominantly specialised in landscapes. After spending his early childhood in London, Smith moved to Alnwick in Northumberland where he trained with English landscape painter Thomas Miles Richardson (1784-1848). Notably, several of his paintings are held in the collection at Alnwick Castle.
